In my 1st year of a home cake business, I made over $40,000 from cakes. Plenty of my friends have made as much and far more, all with different experience (some: none!) with no start-up money and no time. Many of them started—just like me—without any money or customers.
After hearing start-up ‘’horror’’ stories of what isn’t possible but the simple truth? With passion and dream (and the right marketing tactics) you can bring in another income stream for your family.
SELLING CAKES ISN’T JUST ABOUT THE MONEY.
Making money from cakes sales is awesome—but it is only one (of many) awesome reasons. Gaining confidence, being your own boss, making your own hours and working around your family’s needs are all common side effects of starting a cake business.
In 2010 with no money, no job and no home I started a cake business. I had the deepest (deepest) desire not to work for someone else after getting burnt out in the disability support worker and aged care industry. I had a secret dream to sell cupcakes at the markets and got legal.
With sleepless nights dreaming of cake flavour combinations and I started selling at markets, to cafes and restaurants and taking cake orders. I was booked out within 6 months.
Nine (9) months into business I had franchised my ‘’home cake business’ model and signed the 1st franchisee. Within 2 years I had signed 12 franchisees, nationally.
At the same time as selling cakes, I wrote eBooks and sold online, recorded cake decorating video tutorials which went, in part, on YouTube and for sale on my website. I wrote and created an eCourse on how to start a cake business and helped hundreds more people to start their sweet business dream.
Since starting my home cake business in 2010, I franchised nationally (Australia wide) in 2011, wrote and sold eBooks online, sold video tutorials (plus over 1,000,000 views on YouTube), created & wrote more eBooks + eCourses (selling while I’m sleeping), Amazon #1 Best Seller Kindle Book, consulting and mentoring clients. This was all after a dream of selling cupcakes at the markets.
Having a cake business is hard.
Despite all these benefits I wouldn’t want you to get the wrong idea and think having a cake business is easy. Nothing could be further from the truth. But what easy things are actually worth doing?
If you take the task of baking and decorating cakes, deliveries and getting more orders and just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Every day you will be making steps towards growing your cake business.
It takes time management and being productive to smash through your to do list. I follow the 4 day cake rule and never work more than 8 hours a day and never past 6pm (which is exactly what I will teach you). It is a habit and getting very strict with your procedures and learning to say no.
That is how I had fully booked out weeks, earning up to $1500 AUD per week and being able to fit in 1-2 markets per week, 4 wholesale orders and between 4-6 custom cake orders per week.
Progress is the key to achieving any goal. It starts with making a decision and going out and doing the work. Taking 1 step, every single day towards growing your sweet business dreams.
While I am a qualified baker & pastry cook, that has nothing to do with it. Most cake decorators I know (Rose Atwater, Shawna McGreevy, etc.) are self-taught. Most of the skills I needed for a home cake business did not come from my training at a bakery. It comes from going out and doing the work.
Plenty of people can learn cake decorating (again, I’ll teach you). It is easy peasy to watch a YouTube video, pick up a piping bag and within 4-6 cupcakes be decorating just like me, or like any “professional”.
In fact, ‘’qualified’’ does not necessarily mean they are a business owner or entrepreneur. You have a passion and have a dream of a sweet business and future for your family. Whereas a qualified person might not have the hunger or drive. Whereas someone who is learning the lessons, doing the research, trialling, testing, tweaking and repeating! Who is figuring it out, every single day, in the trenches, like you, will have a much more successful business.

People say, “Sure, this works for you, but…” Continue doing what you are doing OR try a plan that has helped over 368 people start a cake business. SELLING WITH NO SHOP & WITH NO CUSTOMERS

Start a website and Facebook business page. In September 2010 I started a cake business and sold at the markets. I shared photos on Facebook and on my website. In 7 months I was fully booked out, earning over $1200 AUD per week. At 9 months I had franchised. I made $40K AUD in the first year of cake business (plus Franchise fees income).
You can build a profitable business in very little time and I’ll show you how to do it step-by-step.
With the right audience, a solid launch plan, a little discipline, and a lot of effort, you can make a living from your writing.
